AKBASH SHEPHERD DOGS

The Akbash is a large working breed first used as a livestock guardian in the plains and mountains of Turkey.

Some Akbash dogs have short coatings while others a long one. It sheds heavily on different seasons. The tail and the legs have a long wavy coat.

Turkey has provided us with some of the oldest dog breeds in the world. The Akbash Dog is at least 3,000 years old. Of all the livestock guardian breeds, the Akbash shows the greatest influence of a sighthound ancestry. A molosser heritage is evident in the breed, but keen eyesight, long legs, a tall, lean, “tucked up” and flexible build, along with speed and agility comes from the sighthound, possibly the Tazi (it’s said the breed can jump over an obstacle as high as a man).

"Magnificent young male Akbash dog named Marlow. Marlow's owner got him as a puppy to live with their livestock. However, they did not have a fenced property. This is a common mistake people make with Livestock Guardian Breeds — most will wander if given a chance. Much training needs to occur in order for them to understand their job and place. Marlow has now been adopted.....here are some recent pictures of him in his new wonderful life!"
